Shortly I’ll get to the meat of this article, but there is one more thing I have to explain, and that is the tool-assisted speedrun (or TAS for short). Any% normally setting the virtual finish line at the end of the story of the game, whereas 100% sets the end point at having collected everything in the game that contributes to a hundred percent completion rating. Individual games also have varying categories of completion, two of the most common being Any% and 100%. Sequence-breaking is large part of speedrunning, a sequence-break is where the player will abuse a glitch/bug in order to skip chunks of playtime. Speedrunners utilise various things in order to find the fastest way through the game. Also, speed reading competitions and this scene from the French New Wave film, Bande à part (1964), show that fast-paced appreciation of art is not unique to gaming. Playing something fast isn’t inherently new, the very existence of speed chess shows that playing a game in speedy manner isn’t an invention of the digital era. If you take the stance that games are an art form, it can seem sacrilegious, speedruns aren’t displaying games as they are artistically intended, but rather transformed into a (multidimensional) racing track. So, why am I writing about speedrunning, and why should you care? The answer is, because I find it to be a very odd thing. King of Kong is a brilliant documentary that covers two people vying for the world record high score on Donkey Kong. Why would people do this? Much like athletes, it’s to post the best time on a leaderboard, which probably derives from the practice of players trying to get a high score on arcade machines. A speedrun, is the act of playing a computer game as fast as you can. Now, if you’re not familiar with concept of speedrunning, I’ll do my best to try and explain it to you. Recently I’ve fallen into the habit of watching hours upon hours of speedruns, on Twitch/Youtube.
